Words of the Apostle

Plain answers

Is Sunday the Christian Sabbath?

No. Sunday is not a new Sabbath law. Christians gather on Sunday because Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. It is a celebration of an empty tomb, not a new Mount Sinai.

No. The Bible never moves the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. Christians gather on Sunday for a different and happier reason. Jesus rose from the dead that day.

Many churches teach Sunday as “the Christian Sabbath,” and many who believe that love Jesus deeply. But it helps to see what the New Testament actually says.

Why the first believers met on Sunday

Jesus rose “on the first day of the week” (Luke 24:1). So His followers began to meet on that day.

On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread.

Acts 20:7

John called it the Lord’s Day (Revelation 1:10). The word is κυριακὴ ἡμέρα kyriakē hēmera, the day that belongs to the Lord. It is a day to celebrate that the grave is empty. It is not a new Mount Sinai. It is an empty tomb.

Moving a shadow does not make it real

Paul called the Sabbath a shadow.

These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Colossians 2:17

If you take a shadow and slide it to a new day, it is still a shadow. Sliding it to Sunday does not turn it into the real thing. The real thing is Jesus. Our Sabbath is not a day. It is a Person.

Turning Sunday into a law misses the point

Some people treat Sunday with all the old Sabbath rules. No work, no play, no shopping, guilt if you miss church. That turns a celebration back into a burden.

Paul said, “One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind” (Romans 14:5). He also warned the Galatians about trusting in “days and months and seasons and years” (Galatians 4:10). The danger is not the day. The danger is thinking the day makes you right with God.

So should Christians go to church on Sunday?

Yes, gathering with God’s people is a good gift, and Sunday is a beautiful day to do it. Believers have done it since the first week after Easter. Just do it for the right reason. Not because you fear breaking a law, but because you want to worship a risen Savior with His people.

The rest that never ends

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Hebrews 4:9-10

The true Sabbath rest is not on Saturday or Sunday. It is in Jesus, every day of the week. You rest from trying to earn God’s love and trust what He finished.

Take a day off. Rest is still wise. Worship on Sunday with joy. And do not judge the believer who chooses a different day, or let anyone judge you.

Go deeper

This answer comes from the teaching “The Rest That Never Ends”. The Sabbath was a picture, and Jesus is the real rest. Stop working to earn God’s love. Rest in what Jesus finished, every day of the week.
