Words of the Apostle

Plain answers

Is Saturday the true Sabbath?

Yes, the Sabbath of the Law was the seventh day, Saturday. But it was the sign of God’s covenant with Israel, and the New Testament says no one may judge Christians over a Sabbath. Our true rest is Jesus.

Yes. The Sabbath in the Law of Moses was the seventh day, which is Saturday. People who say so are right about the calendar. The real question is a different one: are Christians under the Sabbath law at all? The New Testament says no.

Many who keep Saturday love Jesus with all their hearts. We are not against them. We just want to let Scripture speak.

It was Israel’s covenant sign

Every covenant has a sign. Noah had the rainbow. The covenant at Sinai had the Sabbath.

It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel.

Exodus 31:17

God even gave the reason: “You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 5:15). That was Israel’s history. It was a family sign for one family. God made that covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai, not with the whole world.

Paul put it in the list of shadows

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Colossians 2:16-17

Yearly feasts, monthly new moons, the weekly Sabbath. Paul says let no one judge you over any of them. If keeping Saturday were a rule for Christians, he could not have written that. A Sabbath is a σκιά skia, a shadow. The real thing is Christ.

Paul said it was up to you

“One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind” (Romans 14:5). Paul never said that about stealing or lying. He said it about days.

And when the apostles wrote to non-Jewish believers in Acts 15 about what to keep, the Sabbath was not on the list.

The penalty question

Under the Law, breaking the Sabbath carried the death penalty (Exodus 31:14-15). No one believes that still applies. But if you keep the day and drop the penalty, you are picking the parts you like. Paul said a person who takes on the Law is ὀφειλέτης opheiletēs, a debtor “obligated to keep the whole law” (Galatians 5:3). Jesus already paid that debt.

So what is the true Sabbath?

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Hebrews 4:9-10

The true Sabbath is not a day. It is a Person. We enter it when we stop working to earn God’s love and trust what Jesus finished. That rest is open every day of the week.

If you want to rest on Saturday, you are free to. It is a good gift. Just do not let anyone tell you that your standing with God depends on it.

This answer comes from the teaching “The Rest That Never Ends”. The Sabbath was a picture, and Jesus is the real rest. Stop working to earn God’s love. Rest in what Jesus finished, every day of the week.
