Words of the Apostle

Easter

It Is Finished, and He Is Risen

Two sentences changed everything: one from a cross on Friday, one from an empty tomb on Sunday.

“He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.”

Matthew 28:6

Easter weekend turns on two short sentences. The first was spoken from a cross on Friday. The second was spoken at an empty tomb on Sunday morning. Put them together and you have the whole gospel.

Friday: “It is finished”

When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

John 19:30

In Greek it is one word: τετέλεσται tetelestai. It was a word you could write on a bill when it was paid. Paid in full. Nothing left owing.

What was finished? Everything the Law pointed to. Every sacrifice, every feast, every shadow. Jesus kept the Law perfectly, and then He paid the debt that people who broke it owed. When He said “It is finished,” He meant it. There is nothing left for you to add.

Sunday: “He has risen”

He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.

Matthew 28:6

If Jesus had stayed in the grave, the cross would have been a sad story about a good man. The empty tomb tells us the payment was accepted. God raised Him up. The debt is gone, and death lost.

Notice the day it happened. Luke says the women came “on the first day of the week” (Luke 24:1). That is why believers have gathered on Sunday ever since. Not because Sunday is a new law, but because it is the day the tomb was empty. It is a celebration, not a requirement.

What does Easter ask of you?

Some people think Easter is a reminder to try harder. Go to church more. Give more. Clean up your life. But the cross and the empty tomb say the opposite. They say it is done.

The jailer in Acts 16 asked, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul did not hand him a list.

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.

Acts 16:31

That is all. Believe that Jesus finished it. Believe that He is alive. Then rest in it.

A new kind of life

Easter is not only about what Jesus did for you. It is about what He does in you. Paul says that anyone in Christ is a καινὴ κτίσις kainē ktisis, a new creation. The old has passed away. The new has come. You do not live for God to earn His love. You live from His love, because the risen Jesus lives in you.

This Easter, set the backpack down. It is finished. He is risen. You are free.
