Words of the Apostle

Plain answers

How is a person saved according to the Bible?

By believing in Jesus. When a jailer asked, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” Salvation is a free gift of grace, received by faith, not earned by works.

A person is saved by believing in Jesus. Not by giving enough, keeping the right day, cleaning up first or saying the right words. Salvation is a free gift from God, received by trusting His Son.

The biggest question

Paul and Silas sat beaten and chained in a jail. At midnight an earthquake shook every door open. The jailer woke, saw the open doors and drew his sword to kill himself. Paul called out to stop him. Trembling, the jailer fell at their feet and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30).

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

Acts 16:31

Some would hand him a list. Paul’s answer fit on one line.

What it means to believe

The word is πιστεύω pisteuō: to believe, to trust, to lean your full weight on something. You show you believe a chair will hold you when you sit down. Believing in Jesus is putting your whole weight on Him: that He died for your sins, rose from the dead and saves you.

A gift, not a wage

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

A gift is not earned. It is received. The whole New Testament says the same. “Whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Not whoever tithes or keeps a day. “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (John 6:29). God justifies the one who “does not work but believes” (Romans 4:5).

The thief on the cross

The thief on the cross was never baptized, never tithed, never kept a Sabbath and could do no good works. He turned to Jesus and said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:42-43).

Do I need to say a certain prayer?

The Bible never gives one set prayer you must pray to be saved. “With the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses” (Romans 10:10). It starts in the heart. The mouth speaks what the heart already holds.

If you prayed a prayer when you trusted Jesus, praise God. But if you have prayed it a hundred times to be sure, you can rest. Words do not save you. Jesus does.

What about good works?

They matter, but they come after. “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Good works are the fruit, not the root. The same night the jailer believed, he washed the wounds of the men he had locked up.

If you want to believe today

You do not need to clean up first. You do not need the right words. Turn to Jesus and trust Him. Tell Him you know you cannot save yourself, and you are leaning your whole weight on Him. He has never turned away anyone who came to Him.

This answer comes from the teaching “What Must I Do to Be Saved?”. When the jailer asked how to be saved, Paul gave no rules, no formula and no price. He said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus.” That is still the answer today.
